Alex Caceras originally appeared on TUF 11, and his cocky attitude saw him greatly disliked by the majority of the MMA community. He would lose subsequent bouts to Mackens Semerzier and Jimy Hettes in the UFC, with most expecting him to get cut. Instead, he dropped down to bantamweight and was given one more shot, where he dominated Cole Escovedo for three rounds.

Alex Caceras vs Edwin Figueroa Odds;

Caceras – (+110) @ Bovada.Lv
Figueroa – (-130) @ Bovada.Lv

Edwin Figueroa made his UFC debut on short notice against hot prospect Michael Mcdonald, and survived a beating for three rounds while escaping numerous submissions. His followup fight would be an easy one, as he finished Jason Reinhardt in the second round.

Striking wise, Caceras looked fantastic against Escovedo, and actually hasn’t looked that bad in any of his other fights. Figueroa on the other hand wings power punches, and while your lights can go out if they connect, I’m fairly confident Caceras in the superior striking.

Wrestling wise, we haven’t seen much from Caceras, although there’s nothing I’ve seen to suggest Figueroa has particularly strong wrestling either. This is especially evidenced by the fact that Figueroa’s back was taken by Jason Reinhardt.

Jiujitsu wise, the advantage is unquestionably Caceras’, although Figueroa has undoubtedly strong submission defense, and Caceras seems to take a lot of risks which have the habit of putting him in bad positions. However, those bad positions have come against strong submission fighters (Hettes, Escovedo, and Semerzier), and I’m convinced that Figueroa is not on that level.

The Alex Caceras vs Edwin Figueroa prediction is that Caceras dominates Figueroa using his superior striking, and finishes Figueroa on the ground. One of the big variables here is Caceras’ fight with Hettes, which was extremely close before the finish. At the time, people took that fight to mean that Hettes sucked, however given Hettes’ performance against Phan, it’s pretty clear that it’s Caceras who was being severely underrated. At the +110 odds, I think a small to moderate play is warranted on Caceras.

Alex Caceras vs Edwin Figueroa Betting Odds Conclusion: Caceras is a lot better than people give him credit for, and Figueroa’s sloppy style should allow Caceras to score an easy victory. At +110, I like a small to moderate play on Caceras.

Latest Alex Caceras vs Edwin Figueroa Odds;

Caceras – (+110) @ Bovada.Lv
Figueroa – (-130) @ Bovada.Lv

Clifford Starks entered the UFC with little hype as a last minute opponent for Dustin Jacoby, and while the fight wasn’t impressive, he got business done. The standup was relatively inactive, however Starks controlled the fight with repeated takedowns, and was never threatened inside Jacoby’s guard as he conservatively racked up points. Now, he’s looking to go 2-0 in the UFC and remain undefeated overall.

Latest Ed Herman Vs Clifford Starks Odds

Herman – (-290) @ Bovada.Lv
Starks – (+230) @ Bovada.Lv

Ed Herman came off TUF 3, and saw his stock plunge after a loss to Jason Macdonald. He would remain a low level contender for a while, but after a controversial decision loss to Alan Belcher, perceptions of Herman started to change. Since then, he’s 3-1 (with a very bad one sided loss to Aaron Simpson), however he’s scored first round stoppages in his last two fights, including a huge heel hook against Kyle Noke in his most recent outing.

Based on everything I’ve seen, Starks’ striking appears fairly limited. Herman is no elite level striker either, however it’s probably fair to conclude that Herman will hold a striking advantage.

Wrestling could be the difference maker in this fight. Herman was ragdolled by Simpson, and it’s theoretically possible that Starks imposes another conservative gameplan by scoring takedowns and outpointing Herman.

From a submissions perspective, we haven’t seen much from Starks other than that he was able to completely negate Jacoby’s guard. Herman on the other hand threatened Kyle Noke from his guard, and ultimately finished him with a beautiful heel hook. Based on this, I think it’s pretty likely that Starks won’t be able to stall out a win inside Herman’s guard.

The Ed Herman vs Clifford Starks prediction is that Herman controls the striking, then finishes Starks on the ground when Starks attempts to take it there. Whether I can recommend a play at the -290 price is a different matter. Herman is no world beater, and Starks is still an unknown commodity. Starks could in theory hold a standup advantage, and he could also in theory be able to stall out a win inside Herman’s guard. For me, those reasons are enough to stay away from the -290 Herman price, even though I expect him to get the finish.

Ed Herman vs Clifford Starks Betting Odds Conclusion: Herman’s a lot more established, but that doesn’t mean he’s better. People are picking him on name alone, and while he should win, there’s nothing to support the current -290 line, and that’s enough reason for me to leave the fight well alone.

Current Ed Herman Vs Clifford Starks Odds

Herman – (-290) @ Bovada.Lv
Starks – (+230) @ Bovada.Lv

Renan Barao entered Zuffa with a ton of wins, but no big names. Now, having gone 4-0 combined in the WEC and the UFC, he’s in virtually everyone’s top 10 rankings. His UFC run has seen him easily outwrestle Cole Escovedo, and most recently Barao finished Brad Pickett with a first round choke after stunning him with a big knee. With a win here, it’s almost guaranteed that he’ll be getting a title shot (with Michael Mcdonald being the only other fighter with a case.)

Current Renan Barao vs Scott Jorgensen Odds;

Barao – (-240) @ Bovada.Lv
Jorgensen- (+200) @ Bovada.Lv

Scott Jorgensen saw his stock soar in the WEC with a huge win over Takeya Mizugaki, and since then has been a top 10 staple. He would lose in a title bid against Dominick Cruz in the final WEC show, however he has comfortably won seven of his last eight fights. Unlike Barao, I have my doubts that Zuffa will be thrilled to give Jorgensen a rematch with Cruz given the one sided nature of their first bout, so I have a feeling they’d force him to win one more in the event of a win.

Jorgensen’s taken a similar approach in most of his fights. He’s fairly heavy handed, although he generally relies on his takedown abilities to rack up points and secure the decision win. Plus, as he showed against Ken Stone, he’s got some solid ground and pound abilities too.

Barao on the other hand has shown a much more diverse attack. His first two WEC fights saw him play a jiujitsu oriented game. His UFC debut against Escovedo would see him effectively wrestle his way to a decision. Against Pickett, for the first time in his Zuffa tenure, we got to see Barao brawl, and he went shot for shot with Pickett.

The point here is that like most bantamweight fights, this is really tough to envision. I have strong doubts that Barao shoots for a takedown, but there’s a good chance that Jorgensen will. The issue is we haven’t seen Barao face a good enough wrestler to really judge whether he will be able to stop those takedown attempts if they come.

The Renan Barao vs Scott Jorgensen prediction is that Barao is able to stuff the majority of Jorgensen’s takedowns en route to a decision win. Ultimately though, it’s tough to be confident in this prediction. Jorgensen is not only the best wrestler Barao has ever faced, he’s the best fighter Barao has faced. While I do think he’ll pass this test, I’m not willing to play it at the -240 price.

Renan Barao vs Scott Jorgensen Betting Odds Conclusion: Barao’s got the hype, but the substance is still lacking. I’m picking him, but Jorgensen is no easy opponent, and at the -240 price, I’ll pass.

Latest Renan Barao vs Scott Jorgensen Odds;

Barao – (-240) @ Bovada.Lv
Jorgensen- (+200) @ Bovada.Lv

Roy Nelson came into the UFC off of TUF 10, and after brutal knockouts over Brendan Schaub and Stefan Struve, he was given a huge step up against Junior dos Santos. Nelson would be quickly defeated, and was given no favors in his return against Frank Mir, which saw Mir control a winded Nelson for three rounds. In his most recent fight, Nelson finally has bounced back with a win, as he managed to finish Mirko Filipovic on the ground.

Roy Nelson vs Fabricio Werdum Odds;

Nelson – (+120) @ Bovada.Lv
Werdum – (-150) @ Bovada.Lv

Many believed Fabricio Werdum was at the front of the line to face then champion Randy Couture, and seemed it as insulting that Werdum was forced to face unknown Junior dos Santos while Brock Lesnar got the opportunity. Werdum would be quickly knocked out and was forced to exit the UFC, but since then, much has changed. Dos Santos is now the #1 ranked heavyweight, Werdum would score huge wins over Antonio Silva and Fedor Emelinaneko, and Werdum’s most recent loss, a horrible fight with Alistair Overeem, doesn’t look so bad considering what Overeem just did to Lesnar. With the dust settled, it’s hard to rank Werdum outside the top 10, and you can’t fault anyone for a top 5 ranking.

Nelson’s the harder hitter, and obviously has more UFC experience, but outside of that, I don’t know what other advantages to give him. Werdum is a lot bigger and stronger, I think he’s the superior striker from a technical perspective, he’s probably the better wrestler, and he unquestionably has the superior jiujitsu. Maybe Nelson is the better gameplanner, but he certainly didn’t show it against Mir, and it’s hard to fault Werdum strategically for his fight with Overeem when you consider the monster he was dealing with.

I can really see this fight taking place everywhere, however I just see Werdum getting the better of the striking exchanges with his legkicks, and bullying Nelson up against the fence. From there, he should be able to secure a takedown, and I see him finishing Nelson on the ground.

The big knock people have against Werdum is his fight with Overeem, however Werdum has been adamant in interviews that he was supremely confident that he’d be able to take Overeem down. I’m confident that Werdum had worked on his wrestling significantly, and that the training will pay off here, with him dominating Roy Nelson.

The Fabricio Werdum vs Roy Nelson prediction is that Werdum easily outstrikes Nelson, scores a takedown, and finishes him on the ground. At the -150 price, I still think Werdum has a ton of value, and am shocked that he’s not in the -250 range. If the Overeem fight never happened, there’s no question that the line would be at least that, and given how Overeem easily stopped Lesnar, it makes little sense to me.

Full disclosure, I’ve historically been very bad at picking Werdum fights, but I really don’t understand this line, and recommend a moderate sized play at the current -150 price.

Roy Nelson vs Fabricio Werdum Betting Odds Conclusion: Crazier things have happened, but Werdum is still an elite level heavyweight, and Nelson isn’t. At -150, you have to play him moderate.

Current Nelson Vs Werdum Odds;

Nelson – (+120) @ Bovada.Lv
Werdum – (-150) @ Bovada.Lv

Koscheck has been the UFC company man for a while. After big wins over Paul Daley and Anthony Johnson, he was finally granted a title shot against Georges St. Pierre, however things would not go well for Koscheck as he suffered an eye injury early on forcing him to fight with one eye en route to a one sided loss. Koscheck spent most of 2011 healing up, however he managed to take one fight against Matt Hughes, which saw Koscheck rebound from the St. Pierre loss with a first round knockout in a fight a lot less one sided than many expected.

Latest Josh Koscheck vs Mike Pierce Odds;

Koscheck – (-220) @ Bovada.Lv
Pierce (+180) @ Bovada.Lv

Mike Pierce entered the UFC with little hype, however after a huge upset over Brock Larson and a competitive fight with Jon Fitch, he’s yet to be the underdog in his last five fights. Recently, Pierce would drop a hotly contested split decision to top contender Johny Hendricks, and bounced back with a close decision win over Paul Bradley in a fight that coincidentally was a lot less one sided than many people expected.

Both of these guys are very similar on paper. Both are strong wrestlers, both really like to strike, both are heavy handed, and the actual striking ability of both is a little questionable. Koscheck has a bit more UFC experience, but Pierce has fought a ton of huge names like Hendricks and Fitch, so there’s really no chance of him folding due to the pressure of fighting a big name.

Motivation-wise, it’s really tough to place where these guys are at. Pierce had all the motivation in the world to perform against Bradley, but he barely scraped by against a decision. Koscheck on the other hand has suffered two losses to St. Pierre, and knows his chances of securing a title shot ever again are slim so long as St. Pierre is the champion. Ultimately the point here is that Pierce has a bit more to gain with a win, and it’s really tough to say where Koscheck’s head is at.

The Josh Koscheck vs Mike Pierce prediction is that the two engage in an absolute war, with Koscheck getting the edge with his superior wrestling and striking. However, as mentioned, Koscheck’s striking was not impressive at all against Hughes, and Pierce tends to do a good job of pinning opponents up against the fence. Plus, Pierce is unquestionably heavy handed, and Koscheck can easily go down in an exchange. At the current -220 price, I’m not going to play Koscheck, but on paper, he should win. Sadly it’s just a sharp line, which offers no real value on either fighter. Boring, I know.

Josh Koscheck vs Mike Pierce Betting Odds Conclusion: These guys are very similar on paper, and while Koscheck has the edge, I’m not going to play the -220 line given his lack of motivation, and the Hughes performance.

With Georges St. Pierre injured, this is really the most natural fight for the interim title.

Since a 2007 loss to KJ Noons, Nick Diaz has been on an incredible tear, capturing and defending the Strikeforce welterweight title multiple times using his incredibly unorthodox boxing game. After a knockout win over Paul Daley, Diaz was scheduled to fight Georges St. Pierre for the UFC welterweight title, however due to Diaz failing to show up for some press conferences, Diaz was slated to face MMA legend BJ Penn instead. In his UFC return, Diaz destroyed Penn as the fight progressed, using his high volume punching style to take a clear decision.

Latest Nick Diaz Vs Carlos Condit Odds;

Diaz - (-225) @ Bovada.Lv
Condit - (+175) @ Bovada.Lv

Carlos Condit entered the UFC with a ton of hype owing to his WEC run, however he would lose his first fight in a close war to Martin Kampmann. He would follow that up with controversial wins over Jake Ellenberger and Rory Macdonald, however still people weren’t that impressed. Thankfully for Condit, the test of time has been very kind, as Macdonald and Ellenberger are now considered two of the best in the division, and those wins seem a lot more impressive right now. Also since then, Condit has posted two brutal first round stoppages over Dan Hardy and Dong Hyun Kim, which has earned him this title shot.

What a great fight, and a tough fight to call.

Diaz’ style is just so strange, and yet so effective. He throws virtually no shots at 100%, but somehow overwhelms his opponents with cumulative punches. Further, the pace just seems to increase as he wears on his opponents. Condit on the other hand has a more diverse striking game, throwing a lot more power punches and kicks. Really, one has to give the standup edge to Diaz just based on how him and his brother have been performing, but Condit is always dangerous.

Wrestling wise neither of these guys have ever shown much offensively, and historically, defensive wrestling has been a problem for both. While it’s entirely possible one or the other looks for takedowns, especially Condit, I have my doubts that either will engage in this kind of strategy.

If the fight does hit the ground, both guys have very strong guard and top games, although my personal opinion is that Condit is a bit more effective with his ground and pound, and has a better overall guard than Diaz.

The Nick Diaz vs Carlos Condit betting prediction is that the two engage in a standup battle, with Diaz doing what he does, as he overwhelms Condit for a late stoppage. Really though, both guys are super well rounded, and there’s a good chance this fight sees every aspect of the game, with huge ebbs and flows of both guys having their advantages. Plus, Condit’s the one with the knockout power, and he can end this fight at any moment. Congrats to anyone who got Diaz early at the close to even line, but at -225, I’m not going to play it. If anything, the value is on Condit, but I’ll end up staying away.

Nick Diaz Vs Carlos Condit Betting Odds Conclusion: The UFC is pushing Diaz to win, but that doesn’t mean he will. That’s my pick, but I can’t advise placing a bet on Diaz at the current-225 price.

Current Available Nick Diaz Vs Carlos Condit Odds;

Diaz - (-225) @ Bovada.Lv
Condit - (+175) @ Bovada.Lv

After a pretty awful (from a betting point of view) UFC On Fox event we are looking forward to UFC 143, which should throw up some interesting (and hopefully profitable!) betting opportunities. At UFC On Fox we focused mainly on underdogs, none of which provailed although Bisping came close (losing by split decision).

Swanson was a WEC veteran, known more for his spectacular losses (to Jose Aldo specifically) than wins. However, he would exit the WEC on a high note with a close decision win against Mackens Semerzier, and finally made his UFC debut almost a year later. In that debut, Swanson would be choked out by fellow WEC’er Ricardo Lamas.

Cub Swanson vs George Roop Odds;
Swanson- (-130) @ Bovada.Lv
Roop – (Evens) @ Bovada.Lv

Roop has had quite the career. He entered the WEC as a UFC reject, and after a failed debut at bantamweight, played spoiler to fan favourite Chan Sung Jung. He would be quickly knocked out by Mark Hominick in his next fight, however his last two fights have seen his stock surge as he dominated Josh Grispi in an upset, and then lost a very close split decision to the heavily favored Hatsu Hioki. Despite the spotty record, Roop is pretty high up in the UFC featherweight division.

I really don’t know how this fight is going to go, but I honestly give Roop nearly every advantage, although Swanson has an okay guillotine. Roop has continually showed superb striking outside of the Hominick fight, and I really don’t believe Swanson is on his level. Further, Roop was able to effectively negate the grappling of Hioki, who at this point I would consider to be a superior grappler than Swanson. Therefore, I have to think Roop can either stuff Swanson’s takedowns, or return to his feet in the event of the takedown.

Further, Roop showed against Hioki that he’s got some underrated takedown abilities of his own, and worst case scenario, he could be the one to take Swanson down.

The Cub Swanson vs George Roop prediction is that Swanson comes to bang, and Roop comes to snipe, with Roop tagging Swanson at will for a late stoppage. It’s a winnable fight for Roop as Swanson has underrated striking, and as mentioned, a strong guillotine, but I really feel this is Roop’s fight to lose. At the +130 odds, I think therefore a small play has to be warranted on George Roop for the mild upset.

Cub Swanson vs George Roop Betting Odds Conclusion: Not counting the Hominick fight, Roop has looked fantastic lately, and you have to play the +130 line small.

Please note that the Cub Swanson vs George Roop Odds now show Roop as evens. We still recommend a small bet.

Russow entered the UFC with little hype, however after an incredible comeback win over Todd Duffee, he became a sort of cult hero. In his return bout, he would upset then rising contender Jon Madsen by surprisingly outboxing his opponent, and now he’d like to improve to 4-0 in the UFC.

Latest Mike Russow vs John Olav Einemo Odds;

Russow - (-150) @ Bovada.Lv
Einemo – (+120) @ Bovada.Lv

Einemo is probably best known for defeating Roger Gracie at the ADCC, and after over five years away from the sport, surprisingly returned immediately into the UFC. His debut would be a tough one as he fought Dave Herman, and the two engaged in a back and forth fight of the night slugfest which saw Einemo finished in the second round.

Russow -270? I feel like I’m in some strange alternate universe. Justin Mccully is not a strong opponent at all, the Madsen win is okay, and Russow loses to Duffee 99 times out of 100. His boxing is mediocre at best, his wrestling is okay, and his jiujitsu is nowhere close to Einemo’s level. What he does have going for him though is he’s a tough guy, who doesn’t take a lot of risks, and his power is arguably underrated.

Einemo on the other hand showed surprisingly good striking in his debut against Herman, and his jiujitsu and wrestling are likely much stronger than Russow’s. Further, the fight with Herman could have easily gone in Einemo’s favour, and I’m convinced Herman would be a significant favorite over Russow. How does it make any sense then that Russow is a significant favorite over Einemo here?

The Mike Russow vs John Olav Einemo prediction is that Einemo dominates Russow with superior boxing, then finishes his opponent on the ground. To be honest, there’s still a lot of variables, as we admittedly haven’t seen a ton of Einemo, and he does take a lot of risks. However, given that I’m picking him, a small to moderate play has to be warranted on the +170 line. It just doesn’t make any sense based on everything that I’ve seen.

Mike Russow vs John Olav Einemo Betting Odds Conclusion: The pick is Einemo as he’s better than Russow in every way, and at +170 it warrants a small to sized moderate bet.

Please note that the odds on Einemo have now dropped to +120, hopefully everybody got there money on when he was at +170! Following the line changes we now only recommend placing a small bet.

Chris Weidman entered the UFC with a lot of hype owing to his wrestling credentials, along with praise from mentor Matt Serra. So far, things have gone according to plan. He dominated veteran Alessio Sakara in his UFC debut, and in his followup fights he’s secured first round submissions over Jesse Bongfeldt and Tom Lawlor, instantly shooting him into the upper echelon of the middleweight division.

Latest Chris Weidman vs Demian Maia Odds;

Weidman – (-160) @ Bovada.Lv
Maia – (+130) @ Bovada.Lv

Maia entered the UFC as a pure jiujitsu fighter, but has since evolved greatly since his one sided loss to Anderson Silva. He’s 3-1 since then, with his lone loss coming to top contender Mark Munoz in a fight many felt he won, and in the Munoz fight he showed vastly improved striking. In his other three wins, Maia has shown improved wrestling as well, and he seems to be a complete fighter at this point.

I don’t know what the hell the public is thinking, but I give Maia virtually every advantage.

Weidman has looked good thus far, but he was tagged by Bongfeldt and Lawlor, and I’m fairly convinced Maia is the superior striker.

Jiujitsu wise, Weidman is unquestionably good, but Maia’s credentials mean you have to give him the advantage. I doubt either submits the other, but Weidman at best will be even with Maia.

Wrestling wise, maybe Weidman has the advantage, but Maia showed very strong wrestling against Munoz, as Munoz was surprisingly unable to control Maia up against the fence.

Really, this is a tough fight to call, but I see a boxing match taking place, with all signs pointing to Maia having the advantage.

The Chris Weidman vs Demian Maia prediction is that the grappling negates, and the two engage in a striking battle. Weidman is young and improving, but all signs point to Maia having the advantage, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he scored his first UFC knockout. At the +130 price, the only question is the size of the play. While I am picking Maia, I recognize there are still a ton of variables here, and so I’m only going to play it small. Maybe I’ll regret it afterwards if Maia dominates, but I’d rather regret playing too little than regret playing too much.

Chris Weidman vs Demian Maia Betting Odds Conclusion: Their grappling should negate, and Maia’s striking should be the difference. At +130, Maia warrants a small play.
