Nate Diaz has been a top guy in the lightweight division since a controversial loss to Gray Maynard in 2010. He would venture unsuccessfully to the welterweight class, however since returning to lightweight he has looked fantastic. He dominated Takanori Gomi in his return using his superior boxing, and in his most recent fight, he upset the surging Donald Cerrone by again using the patented Diaz volume punching style. A win here will very likely get him a title shot.

Latest Nate Diaz vs Jim Miller Betting Odds;

Diaz – (+180) @ Bovada.Lv
Miller – (-220) @ Bovada.Lv

Riding a seven fight winning streak including big wins over Mark Bocek, Gleison Tibau, and Charles Oliveira, Jim Miller seemed to be on the verge of a title shot. That would be derailed however as he was handled by Benson Henderson for three rounds, however with Henderson now holding the belt, that doesn’t look so bad. Since the loss, Miller has rebounded with a submission win over Melvin Guillard, and a win here will likely get him a rematch with Henderson or Edgar.

Stylistically this one is really tough to call. What exactly is Miller good at? His wrestling is average, his striking is average at best, and his biggest strengths are probably his submission game, his cardio, and his lack of risk taking.

Diaz is a very different fighter, but unlike Miller, he’s shown a lot of recent improvement. His wrestling is non existent, his submission game is above average, and his striking is really where he’s shined as of late.

I feel pretty confident in saying that if this fight remains standing, Diaz should hold a pretty heavy advantage. However, if Miller can take Diaz down, I think Miller should be able to rack up points for a decision. A submission seems unlikely either way unless one guy gets hurt.

Can Miller take Diaz down? Three years ago I’d have no problem saying yes, as Diaz was easily taken down by his opponents then. However we really haven’t seen Diaz’ takedown defense tested in his last three fights, and Miller is far from an elite wrestler.

The Jim Miller vs Nate Diaz prediction is that Miller outpoints Diaz in a five round war, mixing up takedowns to earn a close decision win. However I honestly think it’s almost as likely that Diaz keeps this standing and lights Miller up en route to a decision win of his own, or a stoppage midway through the fight. For that reason, despite the fact that I have a slight lean to Miller, I think a tiny play is warranted on Diaz at the current +180 odds.

Nate Diaz vs Jim Miller Betting Odds Conclusion: This is a really tough fight to call, and who knows what to make of the fact that it’s 5 rounds. Play Diaz tiny (1 Unit Bet) or stay away entirely!

Eddie Yagin scored big wins in the TPF promotion over Casey Olson and a huge upset over Joe Soto to get his invite into the UFC. His first fight however would be disastrous as he took on the highly underrated Junior Assuncao, and Yagin would be outstruck by the rangier fighter, and was easily taken down repeatedly en route to a dominant decision loss. Despite the loss, Yagin is being given another chance in the UFC, and it’s not one the promotion expects him to win.

Current Eddie Yagin vs Mark Hominick Odds;

Yagin – (+375) @ Bovada.Lv
Hominick – (-550) @ Bovada.Lv

Mark Hominick has had some ups and downs in his career, but after a dominant win over George Roop, Hominick received the biggest opportunity of his career with a title shot against Jose Aldo. In the title fight, Hominick would be beaten up early on, but nearly finished Aldo in the final round to actually give the champion his first real challenge, leading many to be hyped for a potential rematch. However it wasn’t meant to be, as Hominick would be knocked out in six seconds in his return bout against Chan Sung Jung, and now Hominick needs to start rebuilding.

There’s no other way to say this, the UFC expects Hominick to knock Yagin out, and so does everyone else. I do too, but I think the -650 price is way out of line. I hope to convince you why.

While many consider it ridiculous that Hominick was only awarded a split decision against Leonard Garcia, the fight was in fact much closer than many remember. Further, Hominick’s other impressive win against Yves Jabouin was against a natural bantamweight. Really Hominick’s only impressive win of late was against George Roop, and while Roop has had some good performances, he was recently knocked out by Cub Swanson. Finally, while Hominick did make a fight out of it with Aldo, the general consensus is that Aldo was sick, which contributed to the champion fading in the final round.

Hominick’s striking aside, he’s also shown an Achilles heel throughout his career in his ground game. He was choked out by Rani Yahya and Josh Grispi, neither of whom are considered top fighters. While I wouldn’t exactly classify Yagin as a submission fighter, he did submit Joe Soto, and so it’s always on the table.

The Mark Hominick vs Eddie Yagin prediction is that Hominick easily outstrikes Yagin en route to a late knockout. Should you play the -550 line? Absolutely not. Hominick hasn’t looked dominant enough to warrant a line like that against anyone, and there’s nothing about this stylistic matchup which suggests he’s going to dominate. I don’t believe Yagin is a world beater, but I think his stock has been unfairly hurt with his loss to Junior Assuncao, when the reality is that Assuncao is just a great fighter.

Eddie Yagin vs Mark Hominick Betting Odds Conclusion: Eddie Yagin’s mom thinks Mark Hominick is going to win this one, but I can’t recommend a play on the -550 line.

Ben Rothwell came into the UFC with little hype, but was quickly thrown to a wolf by the name of Cain Velasquez. After the dominant loss, he bounced back with a controlling win over Gilbert Yvel. Since then, he’s only fought once more, an upset loss to Mark Hunt which saw Rothwell unable to impose his wrestling as he lost a brutal decision.

Current Ben Rothwell vs Brendan Schaub Odds;

Rothwell – (+220) @ Bovada.Lv
Schaub – (-280) @ Bovada.Lv

With wins over Mirko Filipovic and Gabriel Gonzaga, it seemed Brendan Schaub was on the road to being the next big heavyweight contender. However this would come to a crashing end at UFC Brazil as Schaub would be knocked out in the first round by MMA legend Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in a shocking upset to many. With the loss, Schaub is now looking to bounce back and get on the winning track.

Stylistically this fight could go several ways. The two could oblige each other in a standup battle, or Schaub could elect to take Rothwell to the ground. It’s entirely possible that Rothwell could attempt to take Schaub to the ground, but it seems incredibly unlikely.

In a standup contest, both guys are unquestionably heavy hitters, and Rothwell’s chin has historically been able to absorb a bit more punishment. However, I would argue that Schaub has generally looked a bit more polished in his striking, if only evidenced by his performance against Gonzaga.

Ultimately, both guys represent different problems with the heavyweight division in MMA. Rothwell represents the general lack of depth, and Schaub represents the fact that any decently athletic individual can be successful. In the present heavyweight landscape, being a little athletic goes a long way, and for that reason one has to favour Schaub here.

The Ben Rothwell vs Brendan Schaub prediction is that Schaub imposes his wrestling to score takedowns and ground and pound Rothwell for a division. I think Schaub’s recent knockout loss will make him a little gunshy, and so I don’t expect him to come out looking to stand and bang, plus I have to think he’ll respect Rothwell’s power. At the -280 price, I’m actually really liking Schaub here, and have to recommend a small to moderate play, as Rothwell is just not on the same level.

Ben Rothwell vs Brendan Schaub Betting Odds Conclusion: Brendan Schaub could get knocked out, but I honestly see this as an easy win. At -280, play it small to moderate.

Che Mills got a bit of hype early in his career for wins over Marius Zaromskis, however since failing to get into the house on TUF 9, hype for him has dropped considerably. Presently though, a three fight win streak earned him a shot into the UFC, where Mills was given TUF 13 contestant Chris Cope. Mills passed his first UFC test in flying colours, quickly knocking out Cope to score his first UFC win.

Latest Rory MacDonald Vs Che Mills Odds;

MacDonald – (-500) – Bovada.Lv [<- Up To $100 Free Bet]
Mills – (+350) – Bovada.Lv [<- Up To $100 Free Bet]

Rory Macdonald may be the most hyped fighter in the world. After a close loss to Carlos Condit in his second UFC fight, Macdonald has since been on a tear, dominating Nate Diaz and Mike Pyle to cement himself as one of the top fighters in terms of public opinion. He’s young, he’s athletic, he trains with GSP, and he’s not going to be an underdog against to too many welterweights on the planet, if any other than GSP.

Realistically, it’s very difficult to find an advantage for Mills in this fight. Macdonald has shown continual improvement in his striking and his wrestling, and like all of the upcoming elite fighters, he mixes up his striking and wrestling very well.

The biggest factor in this fight though is relative opposition. Macdonald looked fantastic against Carlos Condit, and was arguably five seconds away from defeating the current interim title holder. Mills on the other hand has lost to very average fighters in James Wilks, Jim Wallhead, and Yuya Shirai. Further, his win over Jake Hecht was not particularly dominant, and I give him almost zero credit for his win over Chris Cope.

The Rory Macdonald vs Che Mills prediction is that Macdonald quickly secures a takedown, and pounds out Mills on the ground. Mike Pyle did a good job of negating Jake Ellenberger’s ground and pound in the first round of their fight, whereas he had nothing off his back against Macdonald. A quick stoppage really just seems like a formality. Whether I’m willing to pay the -490 price is another story. Che Mills has knockout power, and could theoretically end this with one punch. As much as a lock I think Macdonald is, it’s enough to keep me away.

However, I would implore you that if an inside the distance line on Macdonald is anywhere in the -200 range, that it should be played small, as I don’t see Mills lasting on the ground as soon as Macdonald gets it there.

Che Mills vs Rory Macdonald Betting Odds Conclusion: Rory Macdonald is the easy pick, but the -500 price is steep. Find an inside the distance line or stay away altogether.

Michael Mcdonald has quickly emerged as one of the top prospects in the bantamweight division. He’s avenged his lone loss, and with the exception of the Chris Cariaso fight, has thoroughly dominated all of his opponents. Most recently, he took on Alex Soto where he brutally knocked out his opponent in the first round, and it seems likely that with a win here he’ll be on the short list for a title shot, if not slightly behind Renan Barao on the pecking order. Regardless, a win here would be the biggest of Mcdonald’s career.

Current Michael Mcdonald vs Miguel Torres Betting Odds;

McDonald- (-110) – Bovada.Lv [<- Up To $100 In Free Bets]
Torres – (-120) – Bovada.Lv [<- Up To $100 In Free Bets]

Miguel Torres was at one point considered one of the top pound for pound fighters on the planet, but boy how times have changed. After a close loss to Demetrious Johnson his hopes for a UFC title shot were dashed, and after a misfortunate Twitter comment he was put on the UFC sidelines. Finally Torres made his return a few months ago, cruising to a decision win over the underrated Nick Pace using a very unorthodox fence assisted gameplan. With a win here, Torres won’t get a title shot, but he’ll keep his top 10 ranking for sure.

When Torres burst on the scene, his jiujitsu and striking seemed incredible. He transitioned between submissions effortlessly against Chase Beebe, and even recently against Demetrious Johnson his ground game looked fairly solid. However against top competition like Joseph Benavidez and Brian Bowles, Torres was really neutralized. His wrestling hasn’t been good enough to get it to the ground, and Benavidez actually finished Torres on the ground on Benavidez’ terms. Therefore, despite the hype Torres initially received during his title run, questions linger about how good he really is.

Michael Mcdonald scored an impressive win in his WEC debut, and has since been heavily favored in all of his fights. He lived up to it completely against Edwin Figueroa, but disappointed many against Chris Cariaso where he arguably chased the knockout too much. Since then, he’s returned with an easy win over Alex Soto, however it’s tough to say whether his stock has recovered. Personally, I think Mcdonald learned a lot of lessons in the Cariaso fight, and I think a lot of people are simply underrating Cariaso.

Wrestling wise, Torres has never improved, and Mcdonald has shown solid skills which continue to improve. If Mcdonald desires to take this to the ground I believe he will be successful, however I think that he will prefer to keep the fight standing as long as things are going his way.

Striking wise, I’ve been far more impressed with Mcdonald. He’s shown a ton of power, and he hasn’t shown any technical holes besides arguably looking too hard for the Hail Mary. Torres on the other hand has shown chin issues, and it’s hard to imagine his new found conservative style finding success against Mcdonald. Further, even if he is successful, Mcdonald can always take him to the ground.

The Michael Mcdonald vs Miguel Torres prediction is that Mcdonald keeps it standing and knocks Torres out. Yes, I could be completely underestimating Torres, but I honestly believe this will be Mcdonald’s coming out party, and that he will pass with flying colours. At even odds, I think a moderate to large play is warranted on Mcdonald, as I’m fairly confident he’s going to hold a striking edge, but that even if he’s on the losing end of the striking, he can always outpoint Torres on the feet. You can’t ever completely count Torres out, and he could theoretically outstrike or submit Mcdonald, but I actually expect domination. Let’s hope this hits!

Michael Mcdonald vs Miguel Torres Betting Odds Conclusion: At even odds I like a moderate to large play on Michael Mcdonald. He’s younger, more athletic, the better striker, and worst case scenario he can rack up points with takedowns.

Rashad Evans has emerged as a bit of a Cinderella story in the UFC. He went from reviled on TUF, to emerging as a legitimate contender with his knockout over Chuck Liddell, ultimately winning the title. Many believed after losing to Lyoto Machida he wouldn’t return to the top, but with four straight wins he’s emerged as the clear #1 contender, and his title shot has been long overdue. Most recently, Evans dominated Phil Davis on the second FOX show to maintain his spot as top contender, and he will finally get his grudge match with Jones.

Rashad Evans vs Jon Jones Betting Odds;

Jones- (-500) – Bovada.Lv [<- Up To $100 In Free Bets]
Evans – (+350) – Bovada.Lv [<- Up To $100 In Free Bets]

Jon Jones’ rise to the top of the light heavyweight division was perhaps the quickest, and most dominant run the MMA world has ever seen. After dominant wins over Brandon Vera, Vladimir Matyushenko, and Ryan Bader, Jones was granted a title shot against Shogun. Jones proved his believers correct by continuing the domination, as he easily finished Shogun in the third round. Since then, he’s defended his title twice, easily controlling Quinton Jackson en route to a fourth round stoppage, and finishing Lyoto Machida in the second round of their affair in his arguably most competitive bout to date. I don’t know whether Jones is unstoppable, but at this point it’s really, really hard to think anyone is going to stop him.

Stylisically, both fighters have gone through their own evolutions. Jones started off as a funky striker, then he started imposing his wrestling, and since then he’s emerged as a calculated striker while still using his wrestling. Evans on the other hand started off as a wrestler, then tried to be a striker, then moved back to his wrestling, however his most recent fight with Phil Davis saw him take more of a balanced approach. Ultimately, with the exception of the Machida fight, it seems clear that Rashad’s gameplans have simply been crafted around his opponent’s strengths.

In terms of striking ability, Rashad likely holds the power advantage, but one has to think Jones has the overall advantage given the technical skills he has shown, and more importantly his reach. Rashad has arguably never outstruck anyone outside of the Phil Davis fight, with all of his big knockouts coming out of nowhere opposed to being a result of accumulated domination.

In terms of wrestling, I’m not so sure how to call this one. We’ve yet to see Jones on his back, but if anyone can take him down it’s probably Evans. Further, Jones had a lot of difficulty taking Jackson down for the majority of their fight, and Machida was able to pop up fairly quickly after being taken down. For those reasons, I believe that the wrestling will probably be a wash.

In terms of gameplanning and intangibles, it’s tough to give an edge. Both fighters have proven to be incredibly cerebral along with being explosive and athletic, although maybe a slight athleticism advantage to Jones, and a slight mental edge to Evans.

The Jon Jones vs Rashad Evans prediction is that Jones does what he does, getting Evans down and making the difficult look easy. Am I willing to play it at -500? No, I would never, and will never play a -500 line against an elite level fighter like Evans. The only question is whether there’s any value on Evans at the +400 line. Honestly, you can’t help but feel like you’re throwing your money away by betting against Jones, but I honestly think Evans has a real chance. He can catch Jones with one punch, we really don’t know how the wrestling is going to play out, and Evans has a way of fighting very smart. I can’t fault you for staying away, but I think a tiny play is warranted on Evans at +400.

Brian Stann had an unexpected career resurgence after a drop down to middleweight, and a big knockout over Chris Leben in the beginning of 2011. He emerged a serious contender with another big knockout over Jorge Santiago, leading to a contender eliminator with Chael Sonnen. Unfortunately for Stann, he was no match for the elite wrestler that is Sonnen, as his opponent easily took Stann to the ground en route to a second round submission loss. Now, Stann is making his return and is hoping to rebound with another impressive victory.

Brian Stann vs Alessio Sakara Odds;

Stann – (-400) @ Bovada.Lv [Favourite]
Sakara – (+300) @ Bovada.Lv

Like Stann, Alessio Sakara has also seen an improved career with a drop to middleweight, although his career in the last few years has been plagued with injuries. Multiple fights with Jorge Rivera fell through, and he’s only fought once a year since 2009. Most recently he was dominated by Chris Weidman on the ground for three rounds, however Weidman has emerged as a top contender, and given the stylistic differences between Stann and Weidman, it’s really hard to hold this against Sakara.

Stystlically, it’s tough to imagine this fight going any other way than the two engaging in a boxing match. Neither has ever really looked to score takedowns, and it’s hard to imagine that either will have improved their wrestling sufficiently to score takedowns.

In terms of striking, Stann has arguably looked a lot better. He hasn’t shown any chin issues since being knocked out by Steve Cantwell ages ago, and has fairly easily outstruck his opponents. Further, against Leben and Santiago he’s shown a ton of power. Again, the big hole for Stann is his ground game which was evident against Mike Massenzio and Chael Sonnen, however given Stann has likely improved and the fact that Sakara has never looked to bring things to the ground, this shouldn’t be an issue.

Sakara put together three straight wins before losing to Weidman, although none were truly impressive. James Irvin had an awful weight cut, Joe Vedepo has never been a top fighter, and most considered his uneventful fight with Thales Leites to be wrongly decided. Regardless, he has shown a decent amount of power in his fights, and despite his reputation as being an accomplished boxer, it’s questionably about how high his technical ability is.

The Brian Stann vs Alessio Sakara betting prediction is that the two engage in a boxing contest with Stann getting the better of it, eventually knocking Sakara out. Whether you’re willing to play Stann at the -400 price is a separate matter. Stann did outstrike Santiago who would probably be favored over Sakara, and so one has to think Stann takes this, but you should never be happy with playing a -400 line. Regardless, one has to think Stann comes through, and I’ll play Stann tiny at -400, as him winning just seems like a formality.

Brian Stann vs Alessio Sakara Betting Odds Conclusion: One has to think Stann wins a boxing match, but at -400, you can only play it tiny.

Diego Nunes saw a huge bump in his stock with a win over Mike Brown at the start of 2011, however his hopes of a title shot were ended with a close decision loss to Kenny Florian. Since then, he’s rebounded with a clear decision win over former title contender Manny Gamburyan, and the Nova Uniao prospect looks to continue his title run with another win here.

Diego Nunes vs Dennis Siver Betting Odds;

Nunes – (-160) @ Bovada.Lv [Favourite]
Siver – (+130) @ Bovada.Lv

Dennis Siver played spoiler in Australia when he scored a huge upset win over George Sotiropoulos in the beginning of 2011. After a close decision win over Matt Wiman it seemed he was close to a title shot, however he would be quickly derailed by beating at the hands of Donald Cerrone. With the loss, Siver has decided to reinvigorate his career with a move down to featherweight, and this is his debut in the new weight class.

On paper we have two strikers here, although I believe that Nunes is the significantly better wrestler. Therefore I think there are two routes this fight can take: either Nunes obliges Siver and engages in a striking contest, or Nunes attempts to take Siver to the ground, and attempts to win on the ground. Realistically we could see an entirely standup fight, but I think there’s a strong possibility that Nunes attempts to take Siver down at least once.

Striking wise, Nunes employs a fairly orthodox muay thai game with straight punches and leg kicks, with the occassional spinning back kick. He really hasn’t fought any great strikers, but it’s pretty clear he’s on a decent level. Siver on the other hand has a fairly unorthodox striking style with his looping punches, front kicks, and spinning back kicks, and so it’s difficult to say who the better striker really is. However, based on Siver’s beating at the hands of Cerrone, it’s really tough to give Siver the edge here. But, if there’s a reason to give Siver the edge, it’s because of solid performances against Spencer Fisher and George Sotiropoulos where he showed off his standup game.

Really though, the big thing hurting Siver here is the Matt Wiman fight. Wiman brutalized him in the second round after a takedown, and Siver was completely unsuccessful in returning to his feet. He barely edged the first and third round, however the wrestling and ground game deficiency he showed in that fight does not bode well for his chances against Nunes.

The Diego Nunes vs Dennis Siver betting prediction is that the two engage in a standup contest with Nunes fairly easily outpointing Siver. Siver could theoretically knock Nunes out, or even control him standing, but I do believe Nunes is the more polished striker. However even if Siver has the striking advantage, it seems that Nunes’ wrestling advantage should be enough to grind out a win on the ground, making a Siver win seem a little unlikely.

Diego Nunes Vs Dennis Siver Betting Odds Conclusion: I think a small to moderate play has to be warranted on Diego Nunes at -160.

Alexander Gustafsson has slowly risen through the light heavyweight ranks since his lone defeat to Phil Davis in 2010. He’s since finished Cyrille Diabate, James Te Huna, Matt Hamill, and most recently he quickly knocked out Vladimir Matyushenko in December. This is the UFC’s debut event in Sweden, and there is no doubt the UFC hopes (and believes) Gustafsson puts on a strong performance to enter title contention, although he’ll likely need at least one more win before he gets that shot.

Alexander Gustafsson Vs Thiago Silva Betting Odds;

Gustafsson – (-230) @ Bovada.Lv [Favourite]
Silva – (+180) @ Bovada.Lv

Thiago Sliva was derailed in his initial title run against Lyoto Machida, but bounced back with a quick knockout over Keith Jardine to maintain his spot among the top contenders. Since then, he’s gone 1-1, losing a very close decision to Rashad Evans which saw him nearly knock out Evans in the third round, and a dominant performance against Brandon Vera where Silva easily took Vera down for three rounds and brutalized him on the ground. However, after the win Silva submitted a fake urine sample, and received a year long suspension with the fight being changed to a no contest. He is finally making his return over a year later.

This is a really tough fight to call. Both guys have shown a lot of good things, but they’ve also shown some holes.

Gustafsson’s been racking up impressive finishes, has shown fantastic power in his hands, and training with Phil Davis his wrestling is improving leaps and bounds. However, people quickly forget that he gave up a bad takedown against Te Huna, and was arguably outstruck against Matt Hamill in the first round of their affair. His performance against Matyushenko was pretty flawless, and he’s unquestionably an elite fighter, it’s just that questions linger about how good he really is.

Thiago Silva’s last fight against Brandon Vera was arguably the best he’s ever looked, as he imposed a very smart gameplan by taking Vera down for three rounds and brutalizing him on the ground. How much steroids played into that victory is an open debate, but I’d suggest that it probably wasn’t that determinative. The big detriment to Thiago Silva is his resume in retrospect. His win over Vera while one sided isn’t that impressive when one considers how Vera looked against Eliot Marshall. Further, his only other win in the last three years is against Keith Jardine, and I shouldn’t even have to explain why that doesn’t make Silva a world beater.

Stylistically, this fight is also very tough to call. Both guys have shown a strong willingness to strike, and the wrestling differential is a big question mark. It’s possible either fighter will look to bring things to the ground, and it’s possible either fighter will prefer to keep things standing. Based on everything I’ve seen, I honestly have no idea how to call either a wrestling match or a kickboxing match between the two. Yes, Silva was taken down repeatedly by Evans, but Silva was suffering from a back injury in that fight. In terms of striking, Silva hurt Evans and knocked out Jardine, but Gustafsson has arguably been more impressive with his finishes.

The Thiago Silva vs Alexander Gustafsson prediction is that the two engage in a close fight, with Gustafsson eventually catching and finishing Silva with a big punch. Am I willing to bet on it? Not at these odds. If anything, a tiny play is warranted on Silva at +180 as I honestly believe this is as close to a tossup as you can get. Silva is unquestionably the biggest step up of Gustafsson’s career, and there are very good reasons to believe he won’t pass this test.

Alexander Gustafsson vs Thiago Silva Betting Odds Conclusion: It’s practically a coinflip, and depending on your level of risk, at most a tiny play is warranted on Thiago Silva given the +180 odds.
