UFC 112 Overview

UFC 112 : Invincible is slated for Saturday April 10th, 2010 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. This is expected to be the first open air event, as the event will be held in an outdoor stadium. The main fight or this event pairs Anderson Silva against Demian Maia. Both fighters are Brazilian born. Silva will turn 35 years old in April and holds a 25-4 overall record in mixed martial arts fights. The last time Silva lost was in December of 2006 when Japanese fighter Yushin Okami beat him due to disqualification of Silva. His last win was over American Forest Griffin. In that fight at UFC 101 in Philadelphia, Silva knocked Griffin out. That win won him the Bodog fight of the year. Silva is the current UFC Middleweight Champion. Nicknamed “The Spider”, Silva stands at 6’2, and weighs 205lbs. Maia trained for Judo as a child, and then moved to Kung Fu and Karate. When he turned 19 he was introduced to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He made his MMA debut in December of 2005, where he beat Lukas Chlewicki in Finland via submission-armbar. He then signed with UFC in 2007, and lost just one time. His only UFC loss came on August 29th, 2009 when Nate Marquardt knocked him out. Maia is 32 years old and stands at 6’1 and weighs 185lbs.

The Rest Of The UFC 112 Main Card

The other big time fight in UFC 112 will include American’s B.J. Penn and Frankie Edgar. Penn is 15-2 as a mixed martial arts fighter. He has won his last two bouts, including a total knock out of Diego Sanchez at UFC 107. The last time Penn lost was January 31st, 2009 when Georges St. Pierre knocked him out in Las Vegas. Nickname “B.J.” for baby Jay. Penn is the author of a book titled Mixed Martial Arts: The Book of Knowledge, which is an instructional book on fighting. Penn stands 5’9 and weighs 155lbs. Penn is currently ranked by Sherdog as the #1 lightweight fighter in the world. Frank Edgar was a high school and college wrestler. After graduating from Toms River East High School, Edgar attended Clarion University of Pennsylvania. Edgar currently is an assistant wrestling coach at Rutgers University. Standing at 5’6 and weighing 155lbs, Edgar is nicknamed “The Answer”. He is 11-1 in his mixed martial arts career, with his lone loss coming on April 2nd, 2008 to Gray Maynard. That fight was part of UFC – Fight Night 13 in Broomfield, Colorado. Edgar has won three straight fights, with his last coming on December 5th, 2009 over Matt Veach in Las Vegas.

The Welterweight bout in UFC 112 will feature American Matt Hughes and Brazilian Renzo Gracie. Hughes is a 36-year-old mixed martial arts fighter from Hillsboro, Illinois. He has won 43 mixed martial arts fight, including his last bout over Matt Serra during the UFC 98 fight in Las Vegas. Hughes attended Lincoln College before transferring to Eastern Illinois, wrestling at both institutions. Hughes stands 5’9 and weighs 170lbs. His opponent – Renzo Gracie is 43 and was born in Rio De Janeiro. Standing 5’10 and weighing 185lbs, he is best known for his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu style of fighting. Overall in his career, he has won 13 of 19 fights. He has won three straight bouts including a knock out of American Frank Shamrock. This will be the UFC debut for Gracie.

In the lightweight bout in UFC 112 will feature English fighter Terry Etim and Brazilian Rafael dos Anjos. Etim is 14-2 in professional fights, and he has won four straight. His latest bout was over American Shannon Gugerty as part of UFC 105 in Manchester. Etim is 6’1, 155lbs. His opponent Rafael dos Anjos is 5’7, 155lbs. He has won 12 of 16 fights, and two straight. In UFC Fight Night, he defeated Kyle Bradley via a unanimous decision in Fairfax Virginia.

The Middleweight bout at UFC 112 includes Americans Kendall Grove and Mark Munoz. Grove was born in Hawaii and is a tall fighter, at 6’6. Nicknamed “The Spyder” or “Da Spyder” or “Original Thinker” Grove is 11-6 overall as a MMA fighter. His UFC debut came on April 7th, 2007. In that fight, Grove beat American Alan Belcher via submission. His last fight was at UFC 106 in Las Vegas, where Grove beat Jake Rosholt. The other fighter in UFC 112’s middleweight bout is Mark Munoz. Munoz was a two-time state wrestling champion at Vellejo Senior High School. Standing 6’0 and weighing 185lbs, Munez is best known for his wrestling, muay thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Munoz is 7-1 overall as a MMA fighter, and has won his last two; with wins over Ryan Jensen and Ryan Catone.

The Preliminary Card

The preliminary card at UFC 112 includes five set fights, and one more that is in the works. In the light Heavyweight bout Swedish fighter Alexander Gustafsson is slated to take on American Phil Davis. Gustafson has yet to lose in his professional fighting career. He is coming off his UFC debut, in which he beat Jared Hamman at UFC 105 in Manchester. Davis is also coming off his UFC debut, in which he beat Brian Stann. He is 5-0 as a MMA fighter. The Lightweight bout will offer English fighter Paul Taylor against American John Gunderson. Taylor is 10-5 and coming off a loss to John Hathaway in UFC 105. Gunderson, known as “Quick Guns” is 22-7, and also coming off a loss. At UFC 108 he was beat by Brazilian Rafaello Oliverira. The first Welterweight bout will feature English against American fighter. Nick Osipczak will take on Rick Story. The second Welterweight bout will feature Americans DaMarques Johnson and Brad Blackburn. Lastly, the lightweight bout will offer Paul Kelly against Matt Veach. Kelly is 9-2 in mixed martial arts fights. His latest fight was a loss to Dennis Siver at UFC 105. Veach, who was a star wrestler through high school and college, is 11-1 in his professional fighting career. His lone loss came to Frank Edgar in his last loss. Another Heavyweight bout is being slated at publication time, and the rumor is American Jon Madsen will take on Mostapha Al Turk, from the United Kingdom.
