Jose Aldo is the current kingpin of the featherweight division. Since defeating Mike Brown to take the #1 spot in 2009, he’s cemented his #1 spot and pound for pound status with four straight title defences. In his UFC debut, he took out Mark Hominick in what was probably his worst performance to date, however he bounced back with a methodical performance against Kenny Florian where he spent the majority of the fight defending the takedown.

Mendes – (+215) – Bovada.Lv
Chad Mendes entered Zuffa with a ton of hype given his status at Team Alpha Male, and has been more than -200 in all of his fights. So far he’s delivered, dominating all of his opponents using his superior wrestling, although some commentators have criticized him for having a ‘boring’ style, however at 6-0 in Zuffa he’s established himself as the clear #2 featherweight in the world, and nobody disputes him getting this title shot.
Most see this as a striker versus grappler matchup, with Aldo being the striker, and Mendes the grappler, and Aldo the striker. While I would say Aldo’s grappling is underrated, and Mendes’ striking is also underrated, I think the general perception is correct. If this fight stays standing, Aldo is winning. If Mendes is able to take him down at will, he’s going to take this.
So really, the question here is whether Mendes can get the takedown. With the exception of Omigawa, Mendes has taken everyone he’s fought down at will, and outside of a first round takedown by Florian, nobody’s really ever been able to take or hold Aldo down.
Based on everything I’ve seen, I really believe Aldo will be able to stop the takedown. Also, I don’t want to put too much stock into what I’ve heard, however Gray Maynard has recently trained with Aldo, and has made it clear that he believes Mendes will not be able to score the takedown. Maybe Maynard is biased, but I tend to believe him.
The Jose Aldo vs Chad Mendes betting prediction is that Aldo forces a standup fight, batters Mendes with leg kicks, and finishes his opponent late. It’s a winnable fight for Mendes, and no matter what happens in this fight, the loser is going to be #2 in the world. However Aldo just seems to be the more complete fighter, and at -265, I’m willing to play it small to moderate. In fact, I’m a little surprised Aldo is only -265, as I don’t think we’ll be seeing a line like that for him for a long while.
Jose Aldo Vs Chad Mendes Odds Conclusion: Aldo isn’t unbeatable, but he should be able to stop the takedown, and at the current Aldo Vs Mendes Odds I like a small to moderate play on Aldo.
